Statement:
Carolyn Eskdale’s practice engages with processes of transformation and reconstruction of actual, remembered and imagined objects. Her paintings feature a systematic transference of surface, textures, light and touch.
untitled 21.1 builds up bands of matte synthetic polymer pigment over a contrasting metallic pigment ground. The application of paint reveals subtle gestures, highlighting warm-monochromatic variations in the layers. Optically, the work recalls a fugue-like surface, changing with the angle of vision. The grey-on-grey field acts an internal source of illumination, akin to an interference pattern. This is compounded by the painting’s acrylic box shroud, which closes off the visual field, redirects reflections and both embeds and isolates the painting in the space of viewing.
