Artist statement:

Fish Roe Aktiv builds on my longstanding interest in phrases inspired by self–help, advertising, and wellness trends in consumer culture. I love to paint imaginative extensions of such societal interests, related objects and mashups of concomitant language and slogans.

I like to manipulate a flat graphic mix of words with visual manifestations of suburban essentials (often active wear, seafood extender, sponges, vitamin supplements, pool-noodles, yoga mats and security tape etc.).

The capacity for painting (whether in ink, gouache, acrylic) to make both a celebratory and critical comment on consumer culture has always excited me. It has been a way I can extend upon and reconcile existence with the impacts of this culture.
