Strategic Plan
Geelong Gallery’s 2026–2031 Strategic Plan sets out a clear and ambitious pathway to position the Gallery as a nationally recognised cultural leader and a defining institution within one of Australia’s fastest-growing regions.
The Gallery enters this period from a position of strength, with a nationally significant Collection, a strong track record of acclaimed exhibitions, and growing audiences and sector recognition. Yet the Gallery’s ability to fully realise this potential is constrained by limited infrastructure, visibility and funding relative to peer institutions. Without targeted investment and strategic focus, these constraints will limit the Gallery’s capacity to grow visitation, expand impact and compete at the scale expected of a leading regional gallery.
This plan responds directly to that challenge. It outlines a five-year transformation focused on strengthening artistic leadership, expanding audiences, enhancing visitor experience, supporting artists, and building a more sustainable and resilient organisation.
By 2031, the Gallery will:
- Be recognised as a must-visit cultural destination in regional Australia, with increased visitation and broader audience reach;
- Achieve a more diversified and sustainable financial model, strengthening independence and capacity for investment;
- Demonstrate measurable growth in participation, including deeper engagement with First Nations and diverse communities;
- Progress a compelling, investment-ready case for redevelopment, positioning the Gallery for long-term transformation.
The Strategy is structured around five interconnected Ambitions:
- Building a Creative Future – strengthening financial sustainability, capability and governance;
- Identity & Positioning – establishing a bold and distinctive cultural voice;
- Audience & Community – growing participation and belonging;
- Visitor Experience – delivering inspiring and memorable encounters;
- Artist & Sector Development – championing artists and creative practice.
